It also didn't help when they put Breaking of the Fellowship (an emotional scene because of the themes of completely changing your life and remembering losses, but also understanding what you do have even if it's very little) into this random scene: It's just hilarious because Bilbo hadn't been the focus at all, there's almost no reason for Galadrial to even mention him and Gandalf comes out with some 'deeper' nonsense rather than being able to sneak around easier being smaller. You're talking about the part of the piece which is most remembered and it was in Lord of the Rings. Some of the music in The Hobbit was great, but as an overall piece of work intended to accompany and elevate the film, it doesn't hold a candle to Shore's work on LOTR.

It's not like in LOTR where you have completely different versions of the same theme ( see this for comparison). For example, the Misty Mountains theme just pops up 5 or 6 times but it's always a very similar arrangement with superficial, simple changes. What does The Hobbit trilogy have to compare to that? And even the good themes aren't expanded upon or utilized to the same extent as those in LOTR. Shire music, the Ring music, Isengard, Rohan, Gondor, Rivendell. Think of all the memorable themes and motifs that spring to mind. In my opinion, this is proof they're weak. And you've agreed with him by saying that the others aren't 'terribly memorable'. I think you're actually agreeing with /u/FaerieStories here. The other ones aren't terribly memorable, but they get the job done. I absolutely LOVE the Laketown theme and Gandalf's theme.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the leitmotifs in the hobbit. The only other score of his that comes vaguely close to the quality of tLotR's is from the film Hugo, in my opinion. This shouldn't surprise me too much, because though I adore tLotR's soundtrack, Shore has never been a consistent artist, I've felt. If they play the music from Gandalf's death in tLotR during a scene The Hobbit, I'm going to be thinking of Gandalf's death - not whatever's going on in The Hobbit. And the absolute worst thing was when they shoe-horned emotional pieces used for some powerful moments in tLotR into scenes that were supposed to be equally powerful (but failed, due to the general mediocrity of the project). The Isengard theme during some generic action scene? Not so fine. The Rivendell theme when they're in Rivendell? Fine.

Plus there was another issue with it, and that was very poor judgement in when to re-use leitmotifs from tLotR. It had one or two decent tracks ('Dreaming of Bag End' and the credits song for the third film), but though it did introduce new leitmotifs, they just felt weak (in my opinion).

It didn't really move me at all, which felt tremendously jarring after the cathartic bliss of tLotR's soundtrack. The Hobbit soundtrack was a phenomenal disappointment, I felt.
